Black Chicken

The most unique chicken on the planet! Revered for its striking, all-black appearance, this Indonesian chicken is known for its black feathers, black skin, black comb, black flesh, black organs, and black bones !

Black Chicken/Ayam Cemani is an uncommon and relatively modern breed of chicken from Indonesia. They have a dominant gene that causes hyperpigmentation (fibromelanosis), making the chicken entirely black, including feathers, beak, and internal organs.

Extremely rare and beautiful, Ayam Cemanis have a gorgeous shadowy brilliance that makes them unique and highly desired. Likely originating from Java, Indonesia, Ayam Cemanis were once considered sacred because of the black pigment that pervades their body: feathers, comb, beak, skin, wattles, internal organs, meat, and bones (their blood is not black, however). This hyperpigmentation is called by a genetic condition known as fibromelanosis. Their haunting look is thankfully paired with a friendly, gentle personality. Not the greatest layers, Ayam Cemanis are known to lay steadily for weeks and then take several months off before beginning to lay again.

In Indonesia, they are known for their mystical healing powers due to their black hyper-pigmentation. The hens lay a surprisingly abundant amount of eggs, 80-120 eggs each year. Their eggs are unusually large proportion compared to the hen's body, making them a low feed cost breed with excellent egg laying capability. The birds pictured here are our breeding stock and were selected from many Ayam Cemani birds for their exceptionally black features. However, it is important to understand that not all Ayam Cemani offspring grow up to be solid black, even with solid black parents. We cannot guarantee the distribution of black pigment in the offspring you receive as each chick will turn out different.

Today we remain singularly focused on providing carefully raised, fresh, local chicken to the India & Many other countries. We trace our roots back to a single, small egg farm. A lot has changed over Many Years, including the switch from selling table eggs to growing chickens. But our biggest changes came through a focus on "small." In the 2009, with a nascent consumer consciousness around food production, we moved away from the trend toward bigger, faster and cheaper. We focused on our consumers in the India, US, Canada, UK, Malaysia, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Germany, Switzerland Etc. and on how we raise chickens. We removed from chicken feed the animal by-products that are often used as a cheap source of protein. We stopped the common practice of using antibiotics.

We follow a simple guiding principle: "the way nature intended." All of our chickens are raised in a reduced stress environment, fed an all-vegetarian organic diet with no animal fats or animal proteins, and all organic breeds never, ever receive any antibiotics.
